For Parents

Creative Roots Art Therapy offers a safe and confidential space for your child to explore their emotions and experiences through creative expression. This page outlines how art therapy can support your child, what to expect from sessions within their school, and how we work collaboratively with parents and carers.

Understanding Your Child's Emotional Wellbeing

As a parent or carer, you may be concerned about your child's emotional wellbeing. I understands that navigating these challenges can be difficult, and i am here to support you and your child. Creative Roots Art Therapy provides private art therapy sessions for children and young people, delivered discreetly within their school environment.

What are the biggest worries for parents when a child struggles emotionally?

I understand that parents often worry about their child's anxiety, low mood, difficulties at home or school, friendship challenges, significant life changes, or low self-esteem. Art therapy offers a unique way for children to express these complex feelings when words may be hard to find. It provides a safe, confidential space within the school setting where a trained art therapist can guide them through their experiences using creative materials.

How can art therapy help my child?

Art therapy can be incredibly beneficial for children and young people experiencing a range of issues, including:
  • Anxiety or worries
  • Low mood or emotional distress
  • Difficulties at home or school
  • Friendship or relationship challenges
  • Changes or transitions (such as moving school or family changes)
  • Low self-esteem or confidence
  • Experiences of loss or bereavement
Each child's therapy is individual and tailored to their specific needs, ensuring they receive the support that is right for them.

What if I'm hesitant about art therapy?

It's natural to have questions. Art therapy is a gentle and non-judgmental process. No artistic skill is required; the focus is on self-expression and emotional exploration. Through drawing, painting, clay, and collage, children can process their feelings and experiences in a way that feels comfortable and safe. I am dedicated to fostering a supportive trauma-informed environment, helping children build resilience and develop effective coping skills.

What can we expect from the first session?

The first session, like all sessions, will take place during the school day in a private, appropriate space. Sessions are individual and typically last around 50 minutes. I would recommend a minimum of 8 consecutive sessions to allow for meaningful therapeutic work. Before therapy begins, written parental consent is required, a phone call with the parent and an assessment session. I will work closely with the school while maintaining appropriate therapeutic boundaries and confidentiality.

How is confidentiality managed?

Art therapy sessions are confidential, creating a secure environment for your child to express themselves freely. Information will only be shared if there is a safeguarding concern, a risk of harm to the child or others, or if there is a legal or professional duty to do so. In such situations, information is shared on a need-to-know basis, adhering strictly to safeguarding procedures. End-of-therapy summary reports can be provided upon agreement.

How do you involve parents and carers?

I believe in a collaborative approach. While maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality during sessions, I will work closely with schools and can provide agreed-upon end-of-therapy summary reports. This ensures you are kept informed about your child's progress in a way that supports their therapeutic journey.
